My Random Thoughts

How dare someone suggest

with 5 comments

Last night as I prepared to watch The Bible a ten part docudrama on the History Channel, there were people telling me I should not watch it.  Some of the reasons why they said I should not watch it was:  One of the people who made it was a New Ager, Rick Warren was consulted, the Catholic Church was consulted, they added dramatic scenes that are not in the Bible, they used the NIV version of the Bible, and some other stuff along those lines.

I could understand why some might be offended because of dramatic scenes being added, but some of the excuses are just plain insulting.  How dare someone suggest that I should not watch this because the Catholic Church was consulted?  Even though I am not a Catholic and do not agree with all their teachings they still profess that salvation come through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

When I was in college my closest friends tried to convince me that I should go to church, and I kept on saying no.  I argued that since there are so many different types of churches that all you Christians have no ideal on the right way to worship God or even if there is a God.  When I heard the reasons why I should not watch The Bible, those same thoughts came rushing back again.

What saddens me is there might be some Christians and non-believers who might have not watched this because of what some people were saying.  There are many professing Christians who do not know their Bible stories.  They do not know who Abraham or Moses is.  They do not understand the history of God’s chosen people.

Every day I have come to believe more and more that other Christians do more harm to other Christian’s faith then all of the other things that attack their faith combined.

  1. Are they afraid they’ll see something that exposes their own small faith for exactly what it is? I’ve been around people who wanted me to live by their version of Christianity. They try to fit it all into neat rules and boxes and bash you over the head with it because they are afraid of the truth: grace sets you free. It doesn’t strangle you! It’s like the pharisees all over again

    • What I cannot make up mind with this is it their small faith or is it something much more as a prejudice or hatred. When I think how splintered the “Church” is, I cannot help but think of this prayer by Jesus. John 17: 20-21 20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

      • When I say small faith, I mean faith bound by fear, and out of fear come prejudice and hatred. Truth is, we all have small faith – it is only grace that makes it bigger :-)

I love that prayer in John 17. I have prayed it for me personally, and for the wider catholic (small ‘c’) church. In an Anglican prayer they have the line ‘for though we are many, we are one body’. The enemy wins when we focus more on differences of belief (as in denominations) than on the face of God. But I can’t change anyone else. I can only change me and hope that God shining through me is enough to touch the lives of those around me. Thank you for these thoughts, Thomas.

    • I like the first one better than the second episode. Even though I know the stories, I still find them interesting.
